How to apply eyeliner for your eye shape

Eyeliner is one of the few cosmetic products that can truly change the way you look and with the right application, you can make small eyes appear larger, narrow eyes appear wider and downturned eyes appear more lifted.

When to apply eyeliner

The best way to apply your eyeliner depends on the style that you want to achieve, and we have lots of style inspiration and application tips for you to try in the sections below.

Eyeliner is best applied last, so apply your mascara and eyeshadow first. If curling your eyelashes, you should also do this before you apply your eyeliner as curling your eyelashes after applying eyeliner risks smudging your carefully drawn line.

For a natural lash lift without the need for eyelash curlers, sweep on Volumising Mascara. A unique precision brush offers excellent lash definition and natural cellulose micro spheres give outstanding volume.

In this next section we help you to find the best eyeliner style for your eye shape.

Best eyeliner for almond-shaped eyes

Almond-shaped eyes are those that taper gradually, giving an almond-like shape to your eyes.

To apply eyeliner to almond eyes, start with a very thin line on the inner corner of the upper lid and increase the thickness as you approach the outer corner. We also recommend applying some liner to the outer third of your lower lash line and smudging it with a clean brush.

Eyeliner to make small eyes appear larger

The best way to make your eyes look larger with eyeliner is to apply Volumising Mascara to just your top lashes and then use High Definition Eye Liner to draw a very fine line along the top upper lid. Avoid applying too much eyeliner as this can make small eyes appear even smaller.

Best eyeliner for big eyes

Big-eyed beauties can get away with lots of different eyeliner styles, but a popular trend is a sultry smoky eye.

Our resident make-up artist, Sophie Darling, has shared her tips for a quick smoky eye look and says that the best tool to use is a kohl pencil, such as High Definition Eyeliner.

Gently draw this across the lash line on your eyelids. Then, taking a buffing eyeshadow brush, use a natural brown eyeshadow and buff the product away from the lash line and onto the lid.

Eyeliner for hooded eyes

To emphasize where the upper lid droops or hangs over the natural crease of the eye, apply plenty of eyeliner to the upper lash line. Then, add lots of mascara to top and bottom lashes to give the illusion of wide-open eyes.

Eyeliner for round eyes

To create the illusion of wider eyes, line the outer upper and lower lash line. Use a clean eyeshadow brush to blend outwards and soften the line and you’ll create a soft almond eye shape.

Eyeliner for deep set eyes

Deep set eyes are set further back in the socket which means they can be overshadowed by the brow bone. To define deep set eyes with eyeliner, trace a fine line around the entire edge of your eye. You can also apply the liner to the inner waterline for a more dramatic effect.

Eyeliner for close-set eyes

If you have a small space between your eyes, you can create the illusion of a wider eye with a tapered wing. We recommend starting from the middle of your upper and lower lid and working your way to the outer corner, using a clean brush to soften the line.

Eyeliner for wide-set eyes

The worst thing those with wide-set eyes can do with their eyeliner is to create a cat flick or winged style. This eyeliner style emphasizes the outer corner and will make the eyes look even wider. Instead, opt for a softer style and use a sharpened pencil to apply your eyeliner to the inner corners of both lids, before softly blending your eyeliner towards the corners of the eye.

Eyeliner for downturned eyes

A downturned eye is similar to an almond shape, but the outer corners tend to droop down. To emphasize this eye shape and give a more lifted appearance to the outer corners, apply a wing to the upper lid then use a clean brush to blend it across the outer third of the upper eye lid.

Eyeliner for down-turned eyes

Eyeliner for monolids

Monolid eyes look great with an extra thick layer of eyeliner. Start at the inner corner and increase the thickness of your line as you cross the eyelid towards the outer corner. Big is beautiful so don’t be afraid to go bold with this eyeliner style!
