If mascara makes your eyes water or itch, you are in the right place to find a solution. There are many different things you can do to help relieve the irritation of sensitive eyes.

In this post we start off by introducing a mascara that’s great for sensitive eyes and share tips for gently applying and removing mascara when you have delicate eyes.

What mascara is best for sensitive eyes?

Some mascara ingredients can cause irritation or you may find that you have an allergy to one specific ingredient.

If your eyes are prone to feeling sore and irritated when you wear make-up, you may prefer to use a mineral mascara, which are well tolerated by most people.

Sensitive eyes need a gentle mascara that conditions the lashes without stinging sensitive eyes and Green People’s award-winning mascara is ideal for those prone to sensitive eyes.

Available in brown and black, our Volumising Mascara allows those with easily irritated eyes to add a coat of colour to their lashes without the worry that its water-repellent formula will leave eyes itchy and sore.

A moisture-rich blend of Beeswax, Glycerine and Sunflower Oil help to support lash health while nourishing Vitamin E plant oils plump out lashes to make them look fuller.

Natural mineral pigments provide buildable colour for a long-lasting lash length which is lifted and defined by natural cellulose micro spheres and a unique precision brush.

Praise for our mascara for sensitive eyes

Our mascara’s suitability for sensitive eyes impressed The Independent who featured it in their article titled ‘13 best mascaras for sensitive eyes that lengthen lashes without irritation’. Our customers love it too and here we’ve shared one of our favourite reviews.

“I have always had problem with my skin and my eyes when I put make up around as it's quite sensitive area for me, my eyes can get really sore.

So, I searched for some mascara that I could use and wouldn't hurt my eyes. Green People is the one I was looking for. It does its job but lighter on your eyes and skin. If you have problem with sensitivity this mascara is perfect!” Review by Francesca P.

4 tips for applying mascara to sensitive eyes

If your eyes are sensitive, these mascara application tips can help you to add length without causing irritation.

COAT THE TIPS AND NOT THE ROOTS

Applying your mascara as close to the lash roots as possible can be very irritating for sensitive eyes.

Instead, gently move your mascara wand in a zigzag motion to coat only the middle and tips of your lashes. This lifts the lashes without interactive with the root to reduce the risk of your mascara from irritating the delicate skin around your eyes.

As well as preventing soreness, this technique makes sure that your mascara will not look clumpy or overloaded with product: it’s a win-win!

CHANGE YOUR MASCARA EVERY 3 MONTHS

This is a tip for everyone but it is especially important for those with sensitive eyes. Your mascara can harbour bacteria so it is advisable to regularly replace it.

Most mascaras will have a use by date of around 6 months from opening, however make-up artists recommend throwing out mascaras after 2-3 months.

SAY NO TO SHARING

It is also important not to share your mascara with friends as this can pass on bacteria and even infections. If you do need to share, use a disposable wand and don’t double dip!

REMOVE YOUR MASCARA REGULARLY

Sleeping in your eye make-up can dry out the skin around your eyes, making them more susceptible to irritation and soreness, so always remove your mascara at night. To avoid irritation, use a natural eye make-up remover for sensitive eyes.

Our best mascara remover for sensitive eyes is our Scent Free Cleanser & Make-Up Remover which is free from skin-drying alcohols and fragrance and is especially designed for easily irritated skin.

Its nourishing actives include Calendula, Shea Butter and Squalane which hydrate and soothe as you cleanse whilst effectively removing mascara.

Some waterproof mascaras can be tough to remove, and you may need to double cleanse to remove your make-up thoroughly. To reduce your chances of experiencing eye irritation, we suggest using water-repellent mascara as this can be easier to remove.

“This product is wonderful it doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin at all its nice and creamy and cleanses very well. I use a reusable makeup remover pad to get all my makeup off with it. Very good.” Review by Jayne B.

“This is the only cleanser & make-up remover I use or need to use. A little goes a long way. It leaves my skin smooth and clean, with no after-effects, such as itching or tautness of skin. I love it and take it with me when travelling.” Review by Jacqueline K.
