Have you experienced a rash after shaving? If you have sensitive skin you are more likely to get shaving rash but it is something that most men experience at some point.
Read on to find out how to adapt your shaving routine to avoid the sting of shaving rash, plus how to look after your skin with natural shaving products.
What causes shaving rash?
Shaving rash is a skin reaction that arises after shaving. Also known as razor burn, shaving rashes can develop anywhere you shave and may leave your skin red, inflamed, and sore.
Your shaving technique can be a causing factor of shaving rash and it is important that you do not shave your skin too frequently, too roughly or too close. It is always best to use a fresh razor.
Allergies to ingredients in your shaving products can also trigger shaving rash. To protect your skin during shaving, use a gentle shaving cream or gel that does not contain the following skin irritants:
- Synthetic fragrance
- Harsh foaming agents, e.g. SLS
- Skin-drying alcohols, e.g. ethanol/ethyl alcohol

1: Scrub before you shave
Get a smoother shave by apply a gentle exfoliator pre-shave. Green People for Men No.1 Exfoliating Face Scrub gently loosens protein bonds that bind rough, dead skin cells to the skin surface and as you rinse the exfoliator from your skin, you’ll release the dead cells and create a smoother skin surface for your razor to glide over with ease.

Use a damp shaving brush to apply the shaving gel and leave this on for a few minutes to help soften your beard. Then, gently shave in the direction of the growth of your facial hair.
Use slow but short sweeps with a steady pressure, starting from the sides of your ears and working towards the chin. Rinse thoroughly.
Rinse the razor frequently to keep it free from stubble and accumulated shaving foam. Once you have finished shaving, rinse away any remaining shaving foam and loose bristles and then gently pat the skin dry with a soft towel.
3: Protect post-shave
As well as trimming your facial hair, shaving also removes cells from the top surface of your skin, revealing new cells underneath. These younger, fresher skin cells are more vulnerable to irritation and sun damage and need protecting with a hydrating SPF moisturiser.
Keep skin soft, smooth and sun safe with Green People for Men Sports+ SPF30 Sun Cream which absorbs quickly and protects against 97% of UV rays.
Formulated with 60% Aloe Vera for soothing skin hydration, this post-shave skin cream calms skin with Sequoia Stem Cell Extract while essential oils from Peppermint & Eucalyptus refresh and cool.
