Why sun cream matters during the menopause
The science tells us that using sunscreen is essential for preserving skin health as it gives protection from:
- Sunburn
- Skin cancer
- Age spots and hyperpigmentation
- Premature ageing
- Rosacea flushing
Research[1] from the British Skin Foundation found that almost half of over 50s do not use sunscreen in the summer in the UK. However it is not even just during the summer that SPF should be worn – it is every day.
In addition to protection from skin cancer, sunscreen is also important for preserving skin health by preventing other signs of premature ageing that often start to become apparent around the menopause.
It is during the menopause when skin can become more at risk of rosacea and for those who are prone to it, even just a few minutes in the sun can cause rosacea flushing. Both the NHS[1] and the National Rosacea Society recommend wearing SPF30 sunscreen every day to protect against sun exposure[2].
Menopause is also when skin starts to get thinner and produces less Hyaluronic Acid. One consequence of this is that mature skin is more at risk of dehydration during sun exposure, and this can leave wrinkles appearing more pronounced. Key to avoiding tight and dry skin during the summer is using an SPF moisturiser made with intensely hydrating, skin-firming actives.
Skin that becomes thinner during the menopause may also start to reveal signs of earlier sun damage such as hyperpigmentation. Patches of pigmentation can look darker after exposure to the sun but by applying a high-factor SPF and sticking to the shade during peak sunshine hours, it is possible to maintain an even skin tone while also preventing future pigmentation problems.
