Prebiotics, probiotics, postbiotics; you’ve heard of them, you know they’re good for your gut, but did you know that they can also be great for your skin’s balance when applied direct to the skin?

But which one does what? And where do you start? Become a biotic beauty pro as we guide you through the differences between prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics in skin care.

What is Prebiotic skin care?

Non-living ingredients that help to feed good bacteria boost the skin's tolerance, Prebiotics are key to your skin balance.

Used by the skin microbiome for balance and to maintain its natural defenses, we firmly believe that everyone should be using Prebiotics as part of their daily skin care routine.

In fact, we’re so convinced of the skin-balancing benefits of Prebiotics that we pack many of our best-selling skin creams and SPFs with Inulin, a prebiotic derived from Chicory and Jerusalem Artichoke.

Discover a world of biotic skin care products to care for your skin’s microbiome naturally.

Why? Well, these protective plant fibres make a great food source for the friendly bacteria that make up your skin’s healthy microbiome and, importantly, they cannot be metabolised by harmful microorganisms, such as those responsible for spots and skin infections.

Why is this important? By helping colonies of good bacteria to flourish, Prebiotics play an important role in stabilising the balance of your skin. In turn this helps to soothe, protect and reinforce the skin barrier. Great news for your skin balance!

Here are three of our favourite skin care products, enriched with Inulin:

What is Probiotic skin care?

Probiotics and Prebiotics might sound similar but oh are they different. Whilst our Prebiotics are non-living, Probiotics are usually live bacteria.

They’re found in foods like yoghurt, but they can be used in skin care products too and have different benefits, depending on the strain that you use.

The problem is that because they are ‘live’, and the average pot of skin cream has a shelf life of 6-12 months, most strains of probiotic are less likely to survive in any formulation containing preservatives. Additionally, your microbiome can perceive them as ‘foreign microorganisms’ and destroy them before they’ve provided any benefits!

The only Proobiotic used in our products is Lactobacillus Ferment. Used for its conditioning and antimicrobial properties in our Nordic Roots Hyaluronic Booster Serum this helps to create an inhospitable environment for harmful bacteria so that your skin serum stays fresher for longer.

What is Postbiotic skin care?

And then there’s Postbiotics.

They’re by-products secreted by live bacteria and the main strain that we use is Bacillus Ferment.

You, can find this in our Hydrating Firming Serum and its perfect partners Fruitful Nights Night Cream and Firming Eye Serum, but our cosmetic scientists are so impressed by this Postbiotic that they hope to use it more and more.

Why Bacillus Ferment?

So, what’s so impressive about Bacillus Ferment? A marine active, this Postbiotic comes from a Spanish river that’s referred to as Mars on Earth because its extreme conditions are akin to those found on the planet Mars.

And the effects that Bacillus Ferment has the skin are pretty out of this world too. Proven to increase moisturisation and decreasing water loss by reinforcing and strengthening the skin barrier, Bacillus Ferment supports regeneration of the skin, helps to calm redness and even gives a boost to skin’s firmness and elasticity.

Study results that impressed our skin care scientist include:

  • Increases moisturisation /hydration 26% in 1 hour
  • Helps increase moisturisation, firmness and elasticity in face and body after 28 days
  • Reduces skin redness after 8 hours
