In the UK, teachers cannot supply or apply sun cream so how do you make sure that your child’s skin is protected at playtime, during sports lessons and on the walk to and from school?
Check playtime sun protection off your worry list as our experts explain how to choose a children’s sunscreen for school and share tips for teaching children to apply sun cream correctly.
Which sun cream for school?
Is SPF on your back-to-school shopping list? In the UK, the summer school term covers some of the hottest months of the year, making SPF30 a school bag must-have alongside a hydrating drink of water and a sun hat that shields the face and neck from the sun’s harmful rays.
Looking for a SPF for young, sensitive skin? We love the 150ml size of our Organic Children Scent Free Sun Cream for school. Great for popping in their bookbag or tray at school, it is eczema-friendly and so gentle, the perfect choice for children who are prone to prickly heat.
The squeezy, sugar cane plastic sun cream tube makes it easy for children to apply their own sun protection, ideal for school trips and for reapplying sun protection after sports and swimming lessons.

Still using last year’s sun cream? All our sun creams have a 6-month expiry date and the longer that they are left open, the more likely it is that they have lost their protective SPF power. To make sure you’re getting the best protection, replace your sun care products regularly.
How to apply sun cream for children
SPF needs around 20-30 minutes to be absorbed by the skin so make sure you leave plenty of time to apply sunscreen before the morning walk to school. Re-applying is also important so pop the SPF tube into your child’s school bag so that they can top up their sun protection prior to playtime and outdoor PE lessons.
All school-age children can learn how to apply sunscreen and there’s plenty of fun and educational activities you do to help them understand how much to apply and when to apply it.
HEADS, SHOULDERS, KNEES AND TOES
A childhood classic, the game of heads, shoulders, knees and toes helps children to learn about the body and gets them moving, but have you ever thought to use it to educate young minds on where they should apply their sun cream?
Switch the lyrics to face, arms, knees to toes and don’t forget those all-important hands, ears and nose – they’re commonly missed by adults as well as children!
PAT-A-CAKE
Worried your child won’t be able to rub in their sun cream independently? We recommend first patting sun cream into the skin, and a game of pat-a-cake can help children to do this. Once the creamy lotion has been lightly tapped, it will sink into the skin with ease.
