5 tips for keeping dogs cool in summer
1. Walk wisely
We wouldn’t walk about in the midday sun wearing a fur coat and nor should your dog! Plan your summer dog walks for the coolest part of the day and walk your pet early in the morning or once it starts to feel cool in the evening.
Even dogs with seemingly endless energy can feel fatigued and thirsty on a summer walk so carry plenty of water and a collapsible pet bowl with you.
Hot pavements can hurt delicate paw pads in the summer so walk your dog in a shady spot such as woodland or a forest. They’ll love the chance to cool down in a stream!
2. Cool their kit
You can also help to keep your dog cool by switching up your pet’s accessories for summer. In addition to light, cooling collars you can cool their food by freezing their Kongs or making a dog-friendly ice lolly using low-salt chicken stock.
If they forgo their cosy bed for snoozing on cool floor tiles, let sleeping dogs lie. To help them sleep comfortably during hot nights, make sure there’s plenty of air in the house and make sure their bed isn’t lined with too many blankets.
You may also want to consider purchasing a cooling mat that cools their paws and body whilst they rest. As ever, make sure they have plenty of access to water.
3. Get them groomed
A trip to the pet groomers can relieve fluffy dogs of the heat of their fur. Its also a good idea to brush your dog regularly in the summer and bathing them with a pet-friendly dog shampoo will help cool their skin, and keep hot dogs smelling fresh.

4. Make a splash
If your dog loves to swim, take them to a dog-friendly beach or a safe stream and let them doggy paddle to their heart's content.
5. Look out for signs of dehydration
Dogs who are getting too hot may pant or dribble excessively. Try to avoid getting to this point by ensuring they have plenty of access to fresh, clean water and shade.
Limit the amount of time they spend in direct sunlight or in hot cars and avoid taking them to areas of high heat exposure, such as a crowded beach. Let them seek shade as and when they need to.
If you are concerned that your dog has become unwell because of the heat, seek immediate veterinary attention.
