Once head lice take root in the hair, they are unlikely to leave on their own accord. Here we explain how head lice can be caught and share tips for helping you to control head lice and nits naturally at home by wet combing with an organic shampoo and conditioner.

What are head lice?

Head lice are small insects that lay their eggs in human hair follicles. Though relatively harmless to human health they can cause irritation, such as an itchy scalp.

Head lice can make their way onto any head of hair. They cannot jump from head-to-head but can crawl from person-to-person when heads come into close contact.

According to the NHS, children of school age are particularly prone to catching head lice.[i]

Unfortunately, once head lice move in they intend to stay. If they lay their eggs (nits) in hair, they could multiply.

Can you treat head lice with conditioner?

The NHS recommends wet combing the hair to control head lice. It advises first washing hair with any shampoo then applying plenty of conditioner before you begin wet combing the hair using a nit comb.[i]

Not only will the conditioner help to stop the lice from moving but it also makes it easier to comb through their hair without knots and tangles obstructing your course.

Natural shampoo and conditioner for combing head lice

Our natural children’s shampoo and conditioner will not treat or kill head lice but they can be a useful tool when it comes to combing out nits and head lice.

Hair can first be washed with the Lavender Burst Shampoo and followed with the Lavender Burst Conditioner. This is suitable for use in combination with a nit comb and effective at reducing tangles in fine, long and curly hair.

Super gentle on delicate hair and scalps, they feature a soothing Lavender scent which can help to calm mind and body before bedtime.

Can you prevent head lice?

It is not possible to prevent head lice and the NHS recommends against using medicated shampoos and lotions try to prevent them, as these can be irritating to the scalp.

However regular combing of the hair can help to remove any head lice early on. This can either be dry combing or using a conditioner to wet comb.
