This guide aims to help you to understand greasy hair. We explain why teen hair is so prone to grease, share our top tips on how to stop greasy hair and offer advice on the best shampoo for teenage greasy hair to achieve an oil-free gloss and shine.

Greasy hair is the curse of so many teenage lives. You wash it, and before the day is out it looks in need of a wash again. You can’t spend all day shampooing so what is the best way to treat greasy hair?

Why is my hair so greasy?

It is usually hormones that are the guilty party behind the curse of teenage greasy hair. They increase the amount of sebum (oil) being produced by the sebaceous glands on your scalp, which is then transferred to your hair.

"Hormones, genetics, diet and your hair care products can all contribute to greasy hair"

Really, sebum is good stuff, protecting your hair from damage, but too much of it means you end up with that slicked back, oily look.

Putting greasy hair completely down to teen hormones is a little bit simplistic though.

People of all ages can have hair that tends towards being oily rather than dry or normal, and this is down to a number of things, including genetics, diet and the type of hair care products they use.

Having said that, you’ll probably find your hair gets less greasy once you are out of your teens, so now you do have something to look forward to when you get old!

Our best shampoo for teenage greasy hair

Our Irritated Scalp Shampoo and Conditioner are must-have products for greasy hair. Organic Rosemary Leaf oil, Pineapple extract and soothing Yucca counter oiliness, helping to bring your hair back into balance.

Quite often dandruff and itchiness can occur, even with greasy hair types, but Irritated Scalp shampoo stimulates the scalp to keep it flake-free.

How to stop greasy hair

Fed up with your greasy hair? Don’t worry, there’s plenty you can try. Here are some ideas:

  • Be gentle with your hair. Wash it thoroughly with Irritated Scalp Shampoo daily or every other day which will cleanse and clarify your hair whilst giving it the natural moisture it needs to keep it healthy. This gentle, organic shampoo doesn't contain any harsh detergents such as sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) like most high street shampoos which strip your scalp of its natural oils and can make it over produce sebum causing your hair to become even greasier.

  • If your hair is unbearably greasy then try a dry shampoo a few times a week. Use it with care as too much can cause greasy hair.

  • If you have dry ends, use Irritated Scalp Conditioner sparingly. Your body is already doing what a conditioner does so there’s no need to put more on at the roots!

  • Don’t let your scalp get too hot, as this encourages it to produce more sebum. This means washing in cooler water than usual and not getting the hair dryer too close.

  • Don’t brush your hair too often and try not to play with it. Again, messing around with your hair will stimulate your scalp and encourage more sebum production, as well as transferring oils from your hands to your hair.

  • Have a healthy diet. Eat plenty of fresh organic fruits and vegetables, supplement your diet with Omega-3 fatty acids, mineral-rich Seaweed or Kelp and drink plenty of pure, filtered water. Not only will doing so give your body the fuel it needs to keep you healthy, but you’ll also be giving your skin and hair a helping hand.
