Do you regularly experience mouth ulcers?

In this guide we’ll explain how we make our natural and organic toothpastes suitable for those that may be prone to mouth ulcers and help you to find the best toothpaste for you.

Who can be prone to mouth ulcers?

Anyone can experience mouth ulcers but there some lifestyle stages and habits that can make you more prone to them.

According to the NICE (National Institute for Health & Care Excellence), you may experience mouth ulcers if you have recently stopped smoking or if you have a vitamin or iron deficiency[i].

The NHS also lists having high stress levels, a food intolerance or shift in hormones (such as pregnancy) as factors than can contribute to mouth ulcers.

The NHS also indicates that your dental care routine, such as damaging your gums with your toothbrush or using an irritating toothpaste, can also cause the formation of mouth ulcers.

Can using SLS-free toothpaste help stop mouth ulcers?

Yes. Switching to SLS-free toothpaste is considered to be an effective way to control frequent mouth ulcers and NHS guidance on mouth ulcers also advises against using toothpaste containing sodium lauryl sulphate when you have mouth ulcers.

According to the consumer publication Which? Magazine, “A 2019 systematic review found that SLS-free toothpastes reduced the number and duration of mouth ulcers”[ii]

If you are prone to recurrent mouth ulcers and prefer to use an SLS-free toothpaste made using mild and gentle ingredients, we can help.

We do not use SLS in our toothpastes and all Green People toothpastes are pregnancy safe and suitable for those that may be prone to mouth ulcers and irritated gums.

We offer a choice of fluoride and fluoride-free toothpastes and all our natural and organic toothpastes are made with gum-soothing ingredients including Aloe Vera and Myrrh, chosen for their calming, healing properties.

Soothe gums with a natural mouth rinse

In addition to following NHS guidance to use an SLS-free toothpaste, those prone to mouth ulcers may find that a salt mouthwash helps to soothe discomfort caused by ulcers in the mouth.

A natural salt mouth wash is easy to make, and we suggest making this with sea salt and a little sage. Both these ingredients have antiseptic properties that can help to reduce inflammation.

To make a natural salt mouth rinse pour a cup of boiling water over one tablespoon of sage leaves, cover and steep for 15 minutes, strain the formula and then add two teaspoons of sea salt before refrigerating.

Once the formula has cooled, rinse it around the mouth twice daily after brushing your teeth, taking care not to swallow it.
